  7. Capitalism, as understood today, traces its origins to the writings of Adam Smith, an eighteenth century man. Communo-socialism to Karl Marx, a nineteenth century man. We need a new economic paradigm for the twenty-first century and beyond. When I've said this to many of my friends, both on the left and the right, I've heard the idea dismissed as like something out of Star Trek. Well, I've replied, I WATCHED Star Trek during its original run and what I remembered most were the communication devices you could put in your pocket (if they had pockets, that is), the big viewscreen, the thin plastic squares that held tremendous amounts of data (those have already come and GONE) and the medical scanners that could detect sickness without invasive tests. And I can't tell you how much I freaked out the first time I went into a drug store and the entrance doors opened by themselves. It's not only doable, it's inevitable. When automation and computerization result in a structural unemployment rate of 20 to 25 percent, I expect any advocates of classic laissez faire capitalism will find themselves swinging from lampposts. At some point, something's gotta give. Income inequality WILL resolve itself, because it always HAS, either through war, revolution, or confiscatory taxation. I still hear conservative friends of mine saying that old chestnut about how many people are pulling the wagon versus how many people are riding in it. I say, this is 2018, hook a motor to the damned wagon and EVERYBODY can ride.
