Ironically We were shown the film of the horrifying Forestall Fire, and since that was to be our ship … you know we payed close attention ….as we would be berthed right under the arresting gear … such a peaceful place to sleep …

  23. The funniest thing about a chow line onboard the USS Forestall was that the munitions hoists were right next door ....so you had to get out of the way for a dolly full of 500lbders Sidewinders or everyone’s favorite ....cluster bombs

Thanks Drach … I’m glad you were able to post this episode …40 years ago .. our US Task force maneuvered jointly with NATO .. in the North Cape area about 100 miles from Murmansk … truly a God forsaken stretch of ocean …. What is the Naval History of that area .. the Arctic convoys and the Scharnhorst come to mind … but was it important in the age of sail …. ?

The USS Johnson ( of course ) anchored just of of Kwajalein turned naval bombardment into precision sniping.... 5 times 5 inch guns all firing on a single point 1000 yards away ....the result was Kwajalein was taken with only 10% of the casualties of Tarawa where close fire support wasn’t brought in soon enough .. like Omaha Beach ...
