Thanks Ed for this episode…I was in a committed long term relationship with a F-4j well 12 really … methinks another issue was the old fashioned hand built tube fuselage… and difficulty of maintenance…compared to the lifting body of an F-15 and it’s ease of maintenance.. F18’s engine removal took less than an hour… when the generals compared them on the flight line… looks may have won out…. Those access panels behind the canopies “ turtle backs” no two are alike … well we lost one at sea and they had to go to the boneyard and get the closest production # …. So They flew that one out to the Mediterranean… and You know that cost some $ … and the guy who didn’t secure that panel before the Helicopters rotor wash took it …. Well …panel 100 became his nickname or turtle back …

USMC Harriers Jumped our Carrier during Exercises one Lovely Mediterranean Morning … We were running without Radar and they got to us first … they came screaming in .. on the deck out of the rising sun … made the simulated kill and then showed off with a nice break to port so we could read their markings … I’m glad it wasn’t for real … cause they had us ….it was a case of an amphibious assault ship beating a super carrier… which in 1981 … as the author points out was the very scenario Russia was considering ..and Britain… after all the Harrier was a Brit

Thanks fir a great episode ..It’s Tough to beat Grumman at making a carrier aircraft … the Corsair vrs Hellcat is the classic case Cost, carrier operation and parking and handling … the Grumman style Folding wing might have sealed the deal … those top folding wings take up more room and probably aren’t as robust …

  46. Cam ships should be in the dictionary under “stop gap measures “ it is one of the finest example of the term … the Allies had two perfectly good autogyros and nevertheless nether the Pa-30 or the Kellet was ever used unlike Japan who had a couple of ASW Carriers with autogyros

  57. Those airship hangers are really incredible… I was stationed at NAS Lakehurst and they had converted one into a scale Carrier flight Deck, for training flight deck personal.. was the Corsair’s duralumin armor the same material pioneered by the German Zeppelin program ..?

The B -29’s engines were notorious for catching on fire and those Magnesium rich Crankcases were impossible to put out … Didn’t the RAF modify some Lancaster’s to deliver the A bomb .. the B29 was still iffy even late in the war … a friends dad was stationed in Tinian and he sad the engine fires were a nightmare …

When The FW 190 had one all along along with allied fighters … the bird cage style of the 109 seems to be hard to bail out of .. or get out of if the plane is upside down …

The Russian Morale Gauge must be pretty much on E … the troops from the north are irradiated, frost bitten defeated , disillusioned and probably have dysentery … so they probably aren’t very motivated I’m wondering if the Russian army is having any disease outbreaks like during the Crimean War

The Martin Baker MB-7 ejection seat saved one of our officers lives following a Ramp Strike onboard a carrier … sadly our pilot was never found … the plane had rolled due to the landing gear being torn off … no fault of the seat .. but it was one of those rare cases when even a zero/zero seat was unable to prevail …

The Fw190 was better of a war horse than the 109 and the Dora version was the one of the best at high altitude … part of their success was the variable speed supercharger …. And of course the Genius of Kurt Tank and that Diemler Engine…
