  1. Francis Scott Key was a racist , and the song he wrote was racist . It took almost 117 years after he wrote the Star Spangled Banner to become the National Anthem. The song was put forward by the 1900's South , during the Jim Crow era , and signed into law in 1931 by President Herbert Hoover to become the National Anthem . The consensis of historian's is that , YES , the man who wrote the Star Spangeled Banner , Francis Scott Key , was indeed a racist , and so was the song that he wrote , that was later enshrined as our National Anthem.
