The British 'English' have ever since the war (that I am aware of) played down their own significence in the role of the UK out of respect for the other 'parts'.Their self deprecating character has been their own downfall but that is not to say their position has been usurped.We have tolerated the Scots continuously bemoaning their lot.Its been going on for decades but coming to a 'head' now.I and my friends growing up in the England of the 40s and 50s never thumped the tub but knew of our 'English' acheivements and were proud 'to be English'I personally was never a'flag waver' but in my later years am sad that anything that we should be proud of is being denigrated.
