  1. Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. World War II was in no small part caused by the actions of those desperate to avoid it. Appeasement of Hitler didn't prevent war, it only slightly delayed the war and made it bigger and more devastating when it happened. Had the West stood up to the Nazis in 1938, there would've been no such thing as "World War II", because Germany would've been defeated rather quickly.
