Joffre's offset flight deck (making room for an unusually large island) was certainly an interesting feature. A pity she wasn't completed to see whether this had any advantages or disadvantages in practice.

Why was Kaga chosen as the replacement for Amagi as a carrier conversion instead of Atago or Takao? Kaga's shorter hull made her a less suitable for conversion than the battlecruisers, and it seems as if (especially for the Japanese, who practically elevated cheating on the treaty restrictions to an art form) that Atago and Takao barely having begun construction would actually be an advantage. It would allow a 33,000 ton carrier that was for all intents and purposes built from the keep up as a carrier while still technically being a conversion.

@stevevalley7835 Given that the 8-8 Fleet plan that got cancelled by the Washington Naval Treaty literally would've cost more money than actually existed in Japan, and being forced to abandon this plan was considered a national outrage because the treaty terms didn't recognize Japan as being America and Britain's equal, I'm surprised they were even willing to factor economics into the decision-making. (After all, why care how much debt a military buildup will put you into, if the plan is to pay off that debt by plundering your neighbors?)
