The 1906 HMS Dreadnought was actually the 9th ship to carry the name. When deciding on his new battleship's name, Admiral Fisher chose from a list of the names of ships of the line at Trafalgar (since those would be names inherently suitable to a capital ship), crossing out those already in use by another active warship. He had a pretty good idea of exactly how revolutionary the design was, and wanted to make sure it had a suitably grandiose name.
