  1. With regard to the scenario you laid out for Von Spee's escape attempt had Cradock stuck with HMS Canopus. What if instead of trying to get past the British blockade, Von Spee instead decided to make a run for the Mediterranean? Would he have been able to get his ships past Gibraltar, and if so could he have made his way to link up with Austro-Hungarian fleet? Italy hadn't entered the war yet, so there wasn't a proper blockade of A-H ports in 1914.
