Pound's apparent panic over the possibility of Tirpitz attacking the convoy was clearly irrational, given that Admiral Tovey's heavy escort force (including HMS Victorious, HMS Duke of York, and USS Washington) was more than capable of ripping Tirpitz and Hipper to shreds if they actually had sortied.
