@jasonreed1631 On top of the at best overly ambitious idea of having a single airframe for 3 different aircraft intended to each replace multiple aircraft with different mission requirements...the sheer insanity of the F-35 program is the notion of buying the planes before testing them. Much more effort was placed into politically immunizing the program from cancellation by making sure as many members of Congress as a possible had an F-35 related factory in their district than in making sure a good plane was being created.
