It seems to me that the Monmouths would've been better off dispensing with the belt armor altogether and just building them as large protected cruisers. That weight savings could've allowed for the casemates to be raised a deck higher so they'd all actually be usable. They were never going to have a prayer against large armored cruisers anyway, so the reduced armor probably wouldn't matter much.

While Rodney was quite possibly the only ship to successful use submerged torpedo tubes (and the only battleship to ever successfully use torpedoes, period), Nelson took an Italian torpedo hit right at the torpedo room. Turns out having a hole in your underwater protection isn't a good idea.
