  1. Regarding the Gangut vs Dante Alighieri comparison...wasn't the Italian 12-inch gun also quite good by 1900s to 1910s standards? Also, the Black Sea derivatives of the Ganguts (the Imperatritsa Mariya-class) have some fairly significant differences. They sacrifice speed (being some 2-3 knots slower than Gangut) to get belt armor that's 1.65 inches thicker.

  2. With regard to pre-missile destroyers with autoloading guns? The US Navy did that even without their WW2 ships magically vanishing. That's what the Forrest Sherman class were.
