As far as I'm aware, the highest political office any Bonaparte has held since then is deputy mayor of a small town in Corsica. For several decades, France was pretty serious about not taking the risk. They had a law (not repealed until 1950) exiling the heads of all deposed royal houses. But after WW2, apparently they decided that it wasn't really a threat anymore. Plus, the then-current head of the House of Bonaparte was a war hero, having joined the French Foreign Legion under an assumed name and fought in the French Resistance. So it would've been pretty douche-y to not let him live in France even if he was a Bonaparte.
