Tiger is the odd name out. Because tigers have never been native to Europe.

It was named after Robert Blake, who pretty much made England into the world's premiere naval power.

@WALTERBROADDUS Blake was one of Britain's greatest admirals. Whenever a Royal Navy ship is named after a person, the vast majority of the time it's either a royal, a general, or an admiral.

@Tomato News Network I doubt the Regia Marina would've reacted well to be placed under the command of the Kriegsmarine, a navy about half their size.

They did consider replacing the Type 45 destroyers' 4.5-inch gun with a 155mm. But that fell victim to budget cuts in 2010.

@UNSCForwardontodawn Given Tiger and Blake each had only 2 6-inch guns, I would expect them to fare poorly against Belgrano's 15 6-inchers. The Tiger-class with their autoloading guns could achieve a significantly faster reload than was possible on Belgrano's manually-loaded guns, but not enough to make up for such a large disparity in barrel count. Now if they were in their original configuration, I'd give Tiger and Blake together pretty good odds. 8x QF 6-inch Mk N5 is is a good match in firepower to 15x American 6-inch Mark 16, and Tiger and Blake would have better fire control and better crews. But cutting their firepower in half with the conversion to helicopter cruisers changed everything.

That's because they're using turrets that were intended for a larger ship, but thanks to postwar budget cuts simply used the hulls for incomplete Swiftsure-class cruisers (basically the Crown Colony class with slight upgrades). There simply wasn't room to put more than 2 turrets, not while still having the superstructure and fire control systems.

There were already an HMS Cougar, HMS Puma, HMS Lynx, and HMS Leopard when these ships entered service. HMS Panther was free (because the sister ship of the above-mentioned frigates had just been sold to India), though.
