Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant who was arrested on Thursday and charged with lying to the Bureau, told agents that Joe Biden and Hunter Biden each received $5 million from Burisma, a Ukrainian energy company on whose board Hunter served. The alleged sums were paid by Burisma so that the elder Biden – who was vice president at the time – would “protect us” from “all kinds of problems.” The federal indictment alleges that Smirnov’s claim, which undergirds Republicans’ charge that Joe Biden engaged in corruption while vice president, was a lie.
