This growing xenophobia with anything Russia is concerning to say the least. I’m almost done with Colbert, because the writers are going after low hanging fruit on the food, etc., and Colbert keeps the jokes in. At least The Daily Show, Seth Meyers, and Amber Ruffin are able to make the material funny without giving into to insults at Russians in general. I don’t know about the other shows, because I don’t watch them. If people cancelling restaurants and other culture abroad would think for 30 seconds, they’d realize those who are offering their services abroad are likely those who disagree with Putin and anything Soviet era related. Granted, there have been artists who refuse to denounce Putin, or even support him; that’s a different story.. What we should be doing is supporting the culture as something that transcends politics, authoritarian governments, and horrendous war actions.

@kingyellowman5762 when Trump rise to prominence in the 2020 campaign season, Colbert lost his spark. I wasn’t watching much before then, but I took a break until sound 2019. Depending on the segment, I’d watch or not. But this bit of cracking in Russian cooking and making out Russians in general isn’t a good thing; in fact, it’s ugly. And his audience likes to think they’re progressives, yet they’re getting swept into xenophobia through shitty comedy.

@kingyellowman5762 not at this time. Amber Ruffin is the most naturally hilarious. Trevor is the best interviewer and scholar still funny. Seth has hit his stride and is also doing well.

@RAIVEN. I agree his takes are good; Ambers are as well, but she gives more weight to black and brown issues, and she works for the same corporation. Trevor Noah and TDS have done well parsing out Putin and crony criticism vs. Russians in general; he’s also pointed out some of the US’s issues in the bargain. I’m grateful that Desi did a segment supporting 2 Russian restaurants in Manhattan - both of which have Ukrainian and Russian heritage, and both of which have been shunned.

@kingyellowman5762 yes; I’m fully aware that his current show is not the Colbert Report. How is this not evident. I haven’t been talking about the Golbert Report at all in this thread - just his current iteration. Just as people have called the the tonight show “Johnny Carson,” “Jay Leno,” “Jimmy Kimmel or whoever the current host is,” I’m calling the late show simply “Colbert.”
