Her competence was in question as soon as she tried to change a deal she had already signed. The vote on her deal should have gone ahead, it would have been rejected in parliament and would have been dead. This would have made it easier for her replacement to go back to Europe to ask for a better deal. The EU want the UK to halt article 50 and call a second referendum. Ideally they would like the UK parliament to withdraw the article 50 application, but this is politically impossible without refering the issue back to the people.
