Russia is attempting to set up the conditions to invade the rest of the Ukraine. At some point the west must decide if it will respond or allow the Ukraine to be occupied. Putin has a long term plan to regain control of the states that were once in the USSR. It is all about russian pride. Russia, appears to be following Hitler's model of conquest, there are disturbing similarities between the annexing of Crimea and the sudetenland. Both are justified by the ethnic makeup of the local population.

@jamesdemaio4938 Putin has learned patience, he knows if he take a little bit at a time, a strong western reaction is unlikely as it would seem to be an over reaction. The cold war but everything on a hair trigger, now it is far more difficult to raise the enthusiasm to respond. The same will be true of the EU army, the French will only use their nuclear weapons in response to a direct attack on France and only France.

@jamesdemaio4938 don't be silly, both the Russians and the US have had seventy years to refine their nuclear arsenal. They both have sufficient nuclear weapons to destroy all life on earth. The weapons to worry about are the tactical battlefield nuclear weapons. They lower the threshold at which nuclear weapons are used. Both the us and the Russians have a fully range of WMD. Both have tested fuel air explosives which blue the line between small tactical nuclear devices and conventional weapons.
