  1. Putin has taken the fall of the ussr as a russian humiliation and a personal insult. He is now on a mission to rebuild the USSR by incorporating the former Soviet satellite states into Russia. The Russian military technological developments are a lesson learned from the US, which brought about the fall of the USSR with an arms race that Russia lost. It was a combination of us superiority in microelectronics and the development of an efficient solid rocket fuel for ICBMs that overwhelmed the Russian ability to compete. Putin has only partly understood the lesson, because while the rocket fuel was a purely military technology, the microelectronics revolution was powered by commercial product development, the classic example being the TI speak and spell, that convinced the Russians they had lost the race.
