@peabase but the EU is dishing out money that will be lost to corruption. The EU cannot afford for all member states to be made equal. It operates as a microcosm of globalisation, therefore it requires poor areas to manufacture cheap goods to be sold to the rich member states. So as Orwell said everyone is equal, just some are more equal than others. The eu may have rejected Turkey, but Turkey still holds an ace, as it can always threaten the eu with opening its borders to migrants.

@peabase as I said you just can't get the quality of new members. Northern Ireland is a £10 billion a year liability, and it is questionable if an independent Scotland is sufficiently viable to be allowed to join. Both would be net beneficiaries from the eu budget for years to come. Serbia like Northern Ireland comes with a built in conflict. But maybe the EU is going for quantity over quality. When it comes to not so united, the EU does seem to be having problems with its newer members,for example Hungary and Poland. Eu expansion to the east was always going to be a problem, as its pseudo liberal values are not as popular the further east you go. It has gave up on Turkey, and attempts to recruit the Ukraine ended with a russian invasion. ( a portent of things to come. )
