Comments by "Nigel Johnson" (@nigeljohnson9820) on "Northern Ireland: Boris Johnson battles on two fronts as Brexit protocol returns to haunt him" video.
It is not changes to the protocol that endanger peace in NI, it is the protocol that is doing that.

@Nice0n3 the British government has little say in the acceptance of the protocol by those in northern Ireland, so it is unclear what the UK government is expected to do to improve the operation of the protocol, other than unilaterally modify it. It is not acceptable that the EU should be able to the protocol to impose its rules on the UK.

@RazorMouth so put the border between Ireland and the EU. It is just as valid as expecting the UK to have an internal border.
1
@RazorMouth leaving the EU was the right of the UK, so you will also need to deal with the resulting problems.

@Nice0n3 it is the logic that avoids the scrapping of the GFA, which is supposed 5o be the EU's greatest concern. The objections to the protocol are coming from a section of the NI population.

@Nice0n3 the UK government was at the time, subject to EU blackmail. As for the objections being from a minority, it was a minority that insisted that the land border was not to have custom posts. It was the threats of violence from the IRA that stopped custom controls on the land border. A similar number of loyalists militants could stop the operation of customs on the sea border. The so called legal route, is dependent on the UK agreeing to follow EU rules and directives, not only for goods exported to NI, but for the whole of the UK, bring in a customs union by the back door. This is not acceptable.

@Nice0n3 the news reports of the time provided sufficient evidence of the blackmailing attempts by the EU. At the time the EU were very keen that the UK remained inside the customs union. Something that is not acceptable for a soverign third party state, as it amounted to following EU rules and directives.

@Nice0n3 it has nothing to do with inflated ego, it's knowing the EU's imperial ambitions. The UK was within its rights to leave, but the EU was keen for that not to happen. The EU tried very hard to hobble the post brexit UK, it really did not want the UK as a competitor. It was determined to do all it could to make it as difficult as possible. We have seen how the EU attempted to steal access to UK coastal waters. Where the EU is concerned, what's our is theirs and what theirs is theirs. There was all that nonsense about the device bill, something the UK should have never agreed to pay, after always being a net contributory to the EU budget. I really don't care how the PM deals with the hypercritical EU. The protocol was EU the result of EU blackmail. Signing it was a necessity to escape the grip of this parasite. Now we are free, I don't care how the PM changes it, or even ignores it.

@rustypipe that a great idea, the UK can transfer the financial and political burden onto the republic and the EU. The rest of the UK will receive a £13 billion windfall per annum, and the EU can deal with the political power keg of all those disenfranchised loyalists. Those in the rest of the uk can watching EU troops trying to keep the peace on the streets of Ireland. I think this is an excellent idea, it lets the UK off the hook and more independent of the EU, the only snag is that you have to persuade those in NI to vote for it.
1
@RazorMouth Sinn Fein would say that wouldn't they, but that is not what will actually happen, as it fails to take account of the loyalist reaction. The rest of the UK will certainly gain a big cash windfall.
