I doubt if there is any government in the world that is not corrupt in some way, or does not have corrupt members. Corruption scandals happen in the eu at regular intervals. Anything from fiddling expenses to outright bribery and abuse of power. What will be interesting is how the offenders are punished. The older states, do not have a good record of dealing with corrupt politicians, in Italy for instance, they allow them to be re-elected to office. Also nothing much is said about correcting the effects of bribery or recovery of any ill gotten gains. It will be interesting to see if the eu reverses any of its decisions as a result of finding corruption.

@p_ness that seem like a good policy. Those standing for public office should not have a criminal record, but to this should be added any proven offence of impropriety in public office. In Italy there seems to be no restrictions. In the UK, politicians usually jump before being pushed, and some find their way back into high office after a period of obscurity. In America, the solution seems to be to make bribery and corruption legal. In dictatorships, such as China, it is the state that decides who is allowed to be corrupt.
