The Chinese should use their ban to shame the UK government into banning the trade in ivory in the UK markets.

China has finally realised that ivory belongs on magnificent living elephants and not as dust gathering ornaments stuck on some stupid persons shelf. I applaud the ban and hope that they enforce it with all the ruthlessness of the Chinese state. Now if they would only address some of the ridiculous superstitions contained in traditional Chinese medicine, then China may be taken seriously as a twenty first century power. Hopefully they will act before more of the earth's creatures are made extinct.

The UK government is being very slow to implement a ban on the sale of ivory on UK markets, claiming difficult identifying historic ivory sold from collections. It also wants to exempt ivory art. There is no excuse for either of these. The argument is that old ivory in collections will lose its value. In my view, it is justice that the "investor" loses money for buying such an unethical and cruel item. The sooner this ivory is consigned to the grave the better. I hope all who own it are shamed and face huge financial losses. It would be ironic if China, which has had such a poor record in animal welfare shamed the UK government in taking action on the matter.
