So an EU state is using an international arrest warrant to allow Spain to imprison a political dissident. The EU should be ashamed. It will certainly weaken its position when protesting about civil rights in China. It is difficult not to think that the EU envies Spain for its rule that binds the regions (states) that make up Spain together. Once in Spain it is impossible to vote to leave, no wonder Gibraltar does not want to be part of Spain. If the EU manages to evolve into a federal super state, it is likely that Spain will be broken up into smaller more manageable regions, as will all the other member states.

Nothing Original convenient when the law makes democracy illegal. There are a number of dictatorships around the world where democracy is against the law. Some disguise the lack of democracy by having fixed elections, or elections that offer no real choice. I am sure that I do not need to make them. But we can add spain, as its constitution outlaws the member states ever escaping from Spain. Those denied democracy have no recourse other than to turn to violence, but Spain already knows this.

Rick Stuifzand really convenient way to suppress political descent, just make views you don't like illegal. Make the process of collecting such views in a democratic fashion illegal. The problem here is not the referendum, but the law.

Nothing Original strange you should say that, we recently had a referendum which could have allowed Scotland to split from the UK. It was bitterly fought in words, but it did not descend into violence nor were the supporters of leaving the union imprisoned. So I would say we are more democratic than Spain. Even in Ireland, the northern Irish were given the choice. The same applied to Gibraltar. I feel sure the EU wished it had never included article 50 in its constitution. Hence my comment about the EU's NV of Spain. Fortunately article 50 has yet to be rescinded, so escape is still possible for the UK.

Nothing Original if you don't have democracy you will end up fighting a civil war. The US is not democratic and may yet suffer this fate.

Nothing Original there is a difference between a city leaving a country and a state leaving a union or federation. If a sufficient number of people in a state wish to disassociate themselves from the federal government they have the right to do so. Deny them that right and there is a risk of civil war. If the numbers are sufficiently great civil disobedience will make them ungovernable. The federal government then must chose if it wants to go down the path of genocide. There are a number examples of this in recient history, including at least one in Europe.

JP Alpha A law that is undemocratic. The same sort of laws that deny Tibet freedom from China. Dictators use the shield of the laws they make to defend their position. It is one of the ironies of democracy that it is so easy to give away and so hard to regain. A tick on a ballot paper can give it away, a civil war is often required to get it back. What is worse is when a duplicitous elected government has secretly given anyway the people's democracy in shady complex deals. This is what successive UK governments have done to the UK people with the creeping take over by the EU.

oscar erc the link turns out to be a paper chase, I am finding it difficult to find the original source. Either provide a more concise source or provide a Precis of what you believe it is about.

oscar erc this is not very impressive. It appears to be crude propaganda. I was expecting a serious document that provided evidence based reporting. Other reports suggest that the Catalan region is rich and provides funds to the rest of Spain. If the region is as bad as the link implies, you would think Spain would be glad to be rid of it. Fundamentally it still comes down to the democratic right to self determination. If sufficient numbers back the call for independence, my comments about the path to civil war remain valid no matter the nature of those seeking independence. If there are a sufficient number it will end in military conflict. It is difficult to imagine Spain emulating Syria, but there are similarities. In the case of Syria it is difficult to empathize with either side.
