What is happening in gaza can be traced directly to the Hamas attack on 7/10/23. It is an indisputable fact that had the hamas attack not happened, all the subquent deaths and destruction in gaza would not have happened. The right wing Israeli government would not have had the excuse to attack Gaza. Now is not the time to recognising Palestine as an independent state, it should have happened before the 7/10 attack, but that would have been difficult with hamas in control of Gaza. Now it can only happen if hamas relinquishes control of gaza and releaes all the Israeli hostages. The recognition by Ireland and the rest, is simply a palliative to ease the troubled conscience of the Europeans, it will not have any practical outcome while Hamas is still in control of Gaza. Just as Hamas started the recient conflict by kicking the israili hornets nest, it could easily stop it by releasing the hostages and giving up control of Gaza. Then would be the time to recognise Palestine as a seperate state, as the international pressure on Israel to withdraw its forces would be overwhelming. Hamas must not be rewarded for making martyrs out of the innocent people of Gaza. They cannot be allowed to claim victory, as terrorism cannot be shown to work.

@CaptNeeda My original point was that all the deaths and destruction that has happened since 7/10/23, is a direct result of the Hamas attack. All those who have died in the conflict would still be alive and Gaza would still be intact. Hamas is obstructing the peace, and could end the war at any time. Further, expecting the UK to have any influence on the conflict is unrealistic. At the time of the 1917 arrangement between the Jews and Britain, I doubt if Gaza existed, as the region was formally under the control of the ottoman empire.

@CaptNeeda unfortunately there are a large minority that still mistakenly believe that the UK government has some influence over the conflict. Their protests, some violent, have an expectation of UK government action. It is questionable if the Irish government's recognition will have anything but a negative effect. It does appear to be rewarding the actions of Hamas, which in turn will add further fuel to the conflict. It is interesting that the timing of the 7/10 attack coincided with peace talks between Israel and the surrounding Arab states, something that Iran had reasons to fear. The actions of Hamas have always been an obstacle to peace. Had Gaza spent international aid money as it was intended a more liberal Israeli government might have been in power and the two state solution might have been implemented. That would have been the time to quickly recognise the state of Palestine. While the goal of the zealots,on both sides, is to eliminate each other'sstate, peace is impossible. The speeches reported from Iran suggest that it is Iran that is goading the actions of Hamas. Democracy is an anathema to the theocratic dictatorship. One must presume that it wants to spread its warped ideology throughout the region and Israel stands in its way.
