Whereas in Scotland the pubs remained closed on Sundays. To drink in company you had to go to a hotel: those did a roaring trade on Sundays, even small Bed & Breakfast joints. There may have been some legal guff about being a "bona fide traveller," but nobody bothered about that. The odd thing was, there was no law making the shops stay shut, but they all did.

He certainly would. Foxe's Book of Martyrs used to be one of the few books approved for the strictest of Protestants to read on a Sunday apart from the Bible itself.

No need for joy - he knows where he's going, and it's not the same place as you are!

It was the Puritans, who were busy burning witches, and moved on to ban Saint's Day feasts, May Day, Easter and eventually Christmas. The theatres were closed. Under Cromwell, Britain and Ireland were caved up into districts, each under a major-general, who patrolled with his men on Sundays to make sure no one was having fun. Drink your ale in silence: don't make music or sing! The Islamic world is going through this at the moment, especially under the Taliban, who hate music along with a lot of other things.
