  1. Why were they getting heated about metrication in 1978? Harold Wilson had set a date a dozen or so years ahead for the country to switch to the metric system, so the schools and textbooks all changed: then Edward Heath took over and cancelled the change over. However the schools carried on with the switch, and now everyone under 60 under understands the metric system. Few people of working age understand imperial measures. When Boris talks of bringing the old measures and even the old money back, he's appealing to a dying constituency. He might as well promise to bring back galleons, sickles and knuts.
