The SW African genocide was committed by the Kaiser's army. The doctor/anthropologist Eugen Fischer was in charge of the death camp on Shark Island. He sent hundreds of African skulls and complete corpses of children back to Germany. Hitler studied and annotated his books while in prison and later made him Rector of the University in Berlin. Dr Mengele was a protégé of his successor (Verschuer) at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Anthropology, Human Heredity and Eugenics.

Eradicating local dialects and languages was part of the nation building that many of the new nation-states of the 18th and 19th centuries went through. Generally only the speech of the capital was allowed to be taught in the schools which spread literacy to ordinary people. Many European countries have a history of active suppression of regional languages. This was especially popular in the new ethno-states that grew out of the collapse of the old empires. The National Language may have been recently set free, and had to be imposed on everyone, and those of any minorities were suppressed in the way the national language had been previously. This social engineering went on side-by-side with the eugenic movement that led to people with disabilities being segregated in institutions and "colonies." Genocide was thought of as a progressive movement, and was in full swing in North and South America and Australia throughout the 19th century, and was extended to South-West Africa and Turkey at the end of the century. Compared to that, wiping out languages and cultures did not seem so serious as the people were (to some extent) allowed to live.

@oro7114 It's a different thing. Old-style genocide totally wiped out a people. "Assimilation" erased the contents of their minds but kept the labour of their bodies. Naturally capitalists prefer the latter. Columbus and those who came after him worked the Caribs to death, after which a Jesuit priest suggested bringing slaves across from Africa. The new Black slaves were systematically stripped of their language and culture. The remaining "Indians" were often sent to residential schools where their religion and language were eradicated. The latter process was copied in the other British colonies and also taken up by France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, etc. who made civil rights dependent on proof of acculturation. The old colonial empires have gone, leaving behind a neo-colonial world where the elites who run their countries for the benefit of The Market have absorbed some or all of their old rulers' ways of thinking. The old forcible wiping out of selected minorities' languages and culture continues in Turkey (Kurdistan), Russia (Ukraine for 220 years) and China (Tibet & Turkestan).
