@teeceemoo No, he got the Grand Cross in WWII for the Battle of France. There was a Star of the Grand Cross of the Iron Cross waiting for him, but it was never awarded due to Germany's losing the war. Getting that would have put him on a level with Blucher and Hindenburg.

The British equivalent of the Knight's Cross may be the Distinguished Service Order which colonels automatically got in WWI after their regiment had a spell in the trenches. A lieutenant would have to have been seriously considered for a VC if he got a DSO for bravery. Other ranks did not get Orders in the British army as they were reserved for "gentlemen," like the Blue Max was in Prussia. They got Medals instead.
