Well actually in the 70's and 80's there was a lot of speculation and even guarantees, from some sources, that Aus. and N.Z. and most of the surrounding area in the south Pacific would be safe. My total mindset at the time was. "The nearest strikes would be happening 2000 mi. or kilometers away in the northern hemisphere", and that it would be wise to immigrate to the area if I ever left the military. That paradigm was due to the fact that Russia and the US were the only major Nuclear powers in contention at the time. But then the cold war ended, sort of, with Reagan and Gorby. Now in the 21st century with more 'unstable' nations like North Korea and the unfriendly Middle East being contenders it's much more likely that anyone, anywhere, who has a western ideological mindset won't be left out of the 'party' if or when it happens. :(
