  1. Thats how cooperation works. But if you want get technical, the UK and the US Marines had been working on STOVL long before the JSF. They had identified the Harrier lack of supersonic speed as major hindrance back in the 80s. So both sides had been working the issue for long time

  2.  @weasle2904  its STOVL not SVTOL. The Harrier's design prevents it from going supersonic so yes something different was need. The Harrier was good for what it uses for
