Republic and democracy are different categories. Yes, it did bring us closer to democracy, but all republic means is that there is no monarchy.

@mandatoryhelicopterrides4596 Gee, Aaron, for someone who claims to be so much smarter than everyone else, you don't even know the difference between a direct democracy and a representative democracy. The former means that citizens vote directly on laws. The later means that they elect people to vote directly on laws, i.e., representatives.

@danielmikula1375 Actually, all a republic really means is that you don't have a monarchy. "Republic, not a democracy" is the equivalent of saying "it's not a grape, it's purple!" You can have a democracy without a republic (such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and the Scandinavian countries), a republic without a democracy (China) or a republic and a democracy (France, Germany, the United States). Either way, Aaron is showing his idiocy by fighting on this hill.
