Even without that, considering the way that her uncle surrendered the throne and then went paling around with Nazztys, she definitely wanted to keep the "for the rest of my life, no matter how long or short" promise she made.

Indeed. I'm not a big follower, but I don't go out of my to avoid it, either. I remember seeing a headline that Philip compared Harry abandoning his royal duties to Edward, and I was legitimately shocked, because that's probably about the worst thing that someone like him could probably think to call somebody.

Some countries have a monarchy that doesn't get any formal funding from the government, and they basically just show up for state functions. They are nicknamed "bicycle monarchs." I can see the value of a no-frills head of state rather than blurring the line between head of state and head of government, but I'm not going push for any country that doesn't have one to add it, either.

@barbiquearea I looked it up, and they were, but Philip and Elizabeth had nothing to do with them because of it. You can't hold against someone who had siblings who did awful things that they opposed. Seeing just how many people thought highly of Hitler in the 1930s is a sad state of affairs.

@yassine8935 Not saying they were perfect. My point was that it is unfair to imply that Elizabeth and Philip were some sort of crypto-Nazis because of family members they disassociated from. If you want to criticize, go after the things that they actually did.

@john.premose I just noticed that I used "your" instead of "you're," so it happens to the best of us.

@john.premose I didn't even notice. Oh, my kingdom for when I can get a new computer so I can type on a keyboard instead of using my thumbs ;-)

@RichO1701e Churchill clearly wasn't. Chamberlain wasn't so much pro-Hitler as much as he thought that giving him some of what he wanted would prevent WWII.

@jeremiasrobinson Again, not the country I was thinking of. I think it was a Scandinavian country or the Netherlands.

@john.premose Your replying to someone who was quoting Monty Python and the Hoky Grail.
