You cannot negotiate with someone who literally made the Lebensraum argument in order to justify invading a sovereign country for the second time in a decade. Unless the negotiation is "you get out of our country, all of it (including Crimea)," there is nothing to discuss. "People say 'war is not the answer,' but I say it depends on the question." D. L. @tray2940 I remember when this first started that people insisted there was "no way" Ukraine could hold up against the Mighty Russian Army. Well, they've more than done so.

@exiledhebrew1994 So, Russia, which has already conquered one province in 2014, invades a country and doesn't want them to join an alliance that will protect them? Yeah, that makes sense. Speaking of agreements, the whole "NATO will never expand eastward" was discussed but dropped from negotiations as the Iron Curtain was falling, but Russia did say that they would respect territorial sovereignty of Ukraine if they got rid of their Soviet-era nukes, and they signed an agreement, but Putin invaded twice and said that Ukraine was never a real country, but an extension of Russia. Yes, he can really be trusted to make peace. /s

@Hazegod It is confusing. The first one seems clearly sarcastic because "peace in our time" was what Chamberlain said in 1938, but the second makes it more confusing.

@sandrafrancisco Johnson started negotiating after dropping out of the 1968 election. It was after a battle the United States technically won, but he knew that the best he could ever hope for was a stalemate, and Nixon sabotaged those efforts to win election just to basically end up making the same deal that was on the table before just so more people could get killed, but he could hold power.

@sandrafrancisco How many major wars are the direct result of a previous major war? Yes, there were different sides, but WWI didn't need the assassination of Franz Ferdinand. There were plenty of things that could have started it, which is why it ended up so tangled once it did start. And this war began because of Russian fascism. Either can you try to appease it, or you have to acknowledge that there are some enemies who cannot be appeased and must be defeated. The Ukrainian people are resolute, and Russia is resorting to drafting 300,000 people, many of whom had no idea that was what was happening. This is not what a winning army does. It also doesn't do a phony vote to pretend that several provinces want to be part of its country to try to either save face or escalate.

WWII didn't end with negotiation. It ended with surrender. Russia has already invaded Ukraine once, and Putin has said that it is not a real country. The mere fact that he now wants to say that he's for peace after Ukraine has reconquered territory makes it blatantly obvious that this is just a stall tactic. The "annexation" makes it obvious that he doesn't want peace.

Not counting the tankies who are just ridiculous, the honest people on the left whose brains are being broken is because, ironically, they are fighting the last war. It was pretty obvious that the Iraq War was based on lies, but too many took that to mean that everything the United States government says about the broader world is a lie. In the days before Russia invaded Ukraine, a lot of people were convinced that it would never happen, even as tanks were lining up on the border. Saying they always get it wrong is just as lazy as saying they always get it right. I remember someone in the comments early on said, "but being skeptical [sic] of the CIA works 90% of the time." While I think that they didn't understand the difference between skepticism and refusal to examine the evidence, even if that statement was true, automatically rejecting it puts you in a really bad place for the 10% of the time when they are right.
