@markzuckergecko621 Social Security taxes stop completely after $147,000, which makes it a regressive tax. Payroll taxes are the largest source of taxation for a majority of Americans. Unearned income is not subject to it at all. Over the last 40 years, the richest people in America switched their income more and more to sources like stock options and other things subject to capital gains taxes, which means that their total taxation has plummeted in half since the 1960s. In 1967, the wealthiest 400 families paid an effective rate of nearly twice what the poorest 50% did. Now, it is lower.

Indeed. When realizing that it no longer has ideas that appeal to the majority of Americans, a party can either adapt its views (like Democrats did in the 1990s) or shrink the electorate (like Republicans have been doing in earnest since the Shelby decision). It is truly repulsive.
