@uncletom356 I guess the question is how you start or how you finish. I'm not denying that he did some great work (especially his takedown of Kissinger), but to me, I tend to believe that how people finish is a better indication of that person's work, because it is where they end up based on a lifetime of experience. Obviously, there are exceptions for things like dementia, but I saw nothing to indicate that he realized the mistake of the turn of his final decade.

@uncletom356 I don't know about Hitch. He definitely took a turn when it came to Iraq, and seemed to almost turn into a neocon.

@uncletom356 That's a fair point I think this is a place where people of goodwill and honest intentions can disagree about the emphasis. I don't think that mine is necessarily grounded in pessimism, because I do tend to give people credit for realizing their past mistakes and showing genuine repentance (See: Byrd, Robert C.), but I can understand how someone would want to hope that the positive contribution is the one that gets remembered.

@uncletom356 I don't think it's a matter of looking past as it is saying that someone legitimately changed for the better, expressed complete remorse for his past, and tried his best for decades to make amends. To paraphrase Gene Cousineau from Barry, I have to believe that people can get better, or the world is in a lot of trouble. It is truly said to watch heroes fall, though. Thinking about these things is vital to us all, though, as we try to make the world a better place, and I do appreciate the discussion about how we think about flawed people and they fit, because we are all flawed in our own way.
