@roblong9728 Yes, Reagan did. The 1982 tax increase is the largest peacetime tax increase in American history. If Poppy raised taxes "because he had to," it proves that he had a pragmatic streak that his son doesn't, because the deficits were much bigger under W, and his first response to a bridge collapse was that he wouldn't let people use it as an excuse to raise taxes.

@a-10wartaboo77 TARP was passed in October 2008, but Obama did extend the Bush tax cuts for two years, so the overall point stands.

@plawson8577 I don't know where you're getting those numbers. The top rate on income in the Bush years was 35%, and the capital gains rate was 15%. It is true that the richest 400 families now pay less than the average family as an effective rate. That is in large part due to how capital gains is treated.
