Blanket rules get rid of the good and the bad. I'm not getting rid of Bernie because some voters elsewhere don't pay attention to the state of their elected officials. And limiting it to 70 makes it far more difficult for people who need to work for a living to seek office.

@lisakukla459 It's not about the age of the leadership. What a lot of stuff like this boils down to is, "I don't like the people that others vote in, so I want to try to make it impossible to vote for that person by finding one trait and banning everyone who meets it." Take term limits, for example: do you really think that Kentucky will vote for someone fundamentally different from McConnell or that South Carolina will vote for someone fundamentally different from Graham if they were ineligible?

@tannermcnabb4836 So, you want to respond to an objection to an ageist argument against democracy by saying that the real goal is a different argument against democracy? When Iived in West Virginia, it was my right to vote to give Robert C. Byrd a ninth term in 2006, and 63% of voters agreed with me. When I moved to Pennsylvania, it was my right to vote against giving Arlen Specter a sixth term in 2010, and 54% of primary voters agreed. If turnover is something that really bothers voters, they can vote people out. Now that you're talking about an idea that has proven to give more power to unelected staffers who are less accountable to voters, you're saying that you want to force AOC into retirement at age 41. Why do you hate democracy so much?

@tannermcnabb4836 The standard term limit proposal is 12 years. Even if you went with 20, that still forces her into retirement at age 49. Now, tell me how this is reasonable. If you like Bernie and AOC, why propose something that would kick him out of office and something that would force her out at a young age? Or did you just maybe stop to think that blanket solutions to "I don't like who other people vote for, so I want to make it so that no one can ever vote for someone like that person ever again"? And, ultimately, that's what age an term limits is: changing the rules because you don't like who wins. Yes, people vote for familiar names, but incumbents lose all the time. If people really want someone else, they'll vote out the incumbent. AOC is there because she beat not only an incumbent, but an incumbent in leadership who was being groomed to take over. Saying "it's too hard" isn't a reason to get rid of the actual good people.

@tannermcnabb4836 I didn't respond to your minimum age statement because you didn't respond to me. A minimum age is perfectly reasonable because someone has to have some lived experiences. And I support lowering the voting age to 16, btw. Ignoring the ageism (and several people have pointed it out so far), as people live longer, you are talking about forcing people to pasture. A century ago, not many people lived past 80, but now the average life expectancy at birth is 79. Quite a few people function well well into their 90s. Seeing this particular 89-year-old be well past it and come up with the idea "nobody over 70 should hold public office" is a bad take. And speaking of things you told others, so what if your proposal would arrive too late to take out Bernie? It might arrive on time to take out the next Bernie. Instead of getting mad that someone would criticize your awful idea and your tendencies toward opposing democracy, maybe look at those ideas and why a reflexive notion of wanting to take away the right for people to vote for someone they want because of age or experience might be bad.

@tannermcnabb4836 Term and age limits are anti-democracy. It is telling people that they can't vote for someone over a certain age or over a certain number of times because you don't like who they vote for. How is that pro-democracy or not ageist?

@tannermcnabb4836 I don't like Presidential term limits, but I realize that support is not there to get rid of them. Was America ill served by having FDR as President during WWII? The only term limits I could get behind at the federal level are for judges, and that is because they are appointed. And those Presidents who used the power of government to stifle opposition over decades were not the result of tenure, but of a weak democracy with no one able to put up a fight. Since a long time in office "inevitably" leads to making the head of government untouchable, why didn't that happen when someone went past two terms nationally? Why was Andrew Cuomo forced out in the middle of his third term as governor? You say it's "inevitable," but there are plenty of counterexamples.

@tannermcnabb4836 Ah, but there's where you completely miss the point. When you make blanket rules, you ignore the exception where someone who does a job well who the people want to stay in power, and you say, "Well, it doesn't work in this other case, so that's too bad." Because you want the rule, the burden is on you to prove that it never works. Since I found an example of someone who held an executive office for more than two terms where it did work, I have successfully proven my case.

@tannermcnabb4836 And that's why saying, "I like Bernie and AOC" doesn't work as a defense on legislative term and age limits, either, because they still wouldn't be allowed to serve past some arbitrary point that you say is too long. The exceptions are the point. I want the people to decide, and you want to take that power away. I don't like Mitch McConnell, but the people of Kentucky made the call that he gets to stay, and that's democracy.

@tannermcnabb4836 And speaking of avoiding the question, I tagged you with the question of what is pro-democracy and not ageist about age and term limits, and you didn't answer. Since you don't like me categorizing it as opposing democracy (and your argument has literally been about not liking who people choose), then why avoid the question of why I'm wrong in categorizing it as such.
