I don't think that it's just acknowledging that a black President pushed their idea. I think that a lot of it is that they never really wanted to do it in the first place, and their bluff got called. I remember a friend of mine who was a Republican posted on FB complaining about how "unconstitutional" the individual mandate was, and I pointed out that it was literally the Republican alternative to Hillarycare, and he said that he hadn't really looked into it that much at the time. And he was one of the smarter Republicans I knew, so that was especially terrifying.
