@longliverocknroll5 Real populism is of the left. People on the right use a style to distract from their fascism. No real populist cuts taxes for rich people.

I saw a few Dore videos during the 2016 primary, but as soon as I heard him utter the line that we would be better off with Trump than Hillary, I knew that this was either someone very stupid or very deceitful, and I didn't want to waste any more of my time on him.

@longliverocknroll5 My master's thesis was on the Cross of Gold speech. I think that I can say with confidence that I know what populism is, and not the version of it that Hofstadter convinced people it really was because he saw it as too vulgar compared to the progressive movement of the era.

@jgmediting7770 Hence, why it is more accurate to say that right-wing populism isn't real. Just like white supremacists started calling themselves white nationalists and then alt-right and now identitarian, a lot of so-called right wing populists are really fascists engaging in a rebranding exercise.

@retmarkes Only 6% of Americans are true independents. Study after study has shown that people who call themselves independent really lean one way or the other. And the Boogaloo Boys are not just conservative, they are fascists who want to start a civil war. Pretending to be left to recruit is one of their oet strategies. And if you think that Trump and Democrats are the same, you haven't been paying attention. One accepted democracy, the other tried to pull a coup. One ignored the coronavirus, the other took steps to contain it. One loaded the Supreme Court with the same people who voted for Citizens United, Shelby, and Janus while the other didn't. We want no part of a red/brown coalition, because those never end well for us.

@smithc4007 You might not realize that Trump is an outright fascist who tried to destroy our democracy and loaded the Supreme Court in a way that will make it more difficult for any good thing we can get through Congress to survive. But just keep crying the crocodile tears while defending the man who supported the only Democratic candidate other than Bloomberg to support torture.

@retmarkes Just about anything. Did you ever take a political science course? Heck, I even have anecdotal evidence because I knew several people in Young Democrats who were registered independents, and when I was doing an internship, the leader said that he had to change his voting registration from independent so he could vote in the primary. If you think that there is such a largely swayable number, why do you think that the electoral picture overall has been so steady for the last 20 years?

@jgmediting7770 I'm not sure if they're necessarily the same, but there is a lot of overlap. I think there may be some ordinary people who can be drawn in based on the style who are just sick of the status quo, and I wouldn't necessarily call them fascist, but other than maybe Rand Paul, I can't really think of anyone in American politics who gets labeled a right-wing populist who isn't either a fascist or fascist adjacent.

@retmarkes I majored in Religious Studies (and was the Outstanding Senior) with minors in American Politics and Policy and English. And I can tell that you didn't major in English, because I never said 6% "can choose who they vote for." That was the percentage who don't lean one way or the other. Maybe understand what I actually said before you try to rebut it. Since you majored in political anthropology, this shouldn't be too heavy of a lift.

@retmarkes The two-party system is fascist? And you think that I have no political education? Like any true Jimmy Dore fan, it doesn't take too long to expose your ignorance. Like it or not, a two-party system is inevitable in a First Past the Post system at the state level where a majority is required in the Electoral College. Just because you don't understand math doesn't make it any less true.

@MistahJigglah Every system ultimately boils down to two coalitions, even when there is proportional representation. The only difference is that in ours the coalitions are built before the voting starts instead of after. I would much prefer stricter campaign finance laws, but unfortunately, as long as people keep pretending that the two major parties are the same, they will continue to ignore the effects of their actions. Ever notice how a Jimmy Dore fan either completely ignores when people point out what happens with the Supreme Court, or they further show their ignorance when they are completely unaware of the vote breakdown on the major controversies? Part of the reason why we have unlimited campaign contributions is because Ralph Nader convinced enough people in Florida that there were no differences between the two major parties so that it was close enough for Bush to steal the election.

@MistahJigglah What did they get? Two Supreme Court Justices. Once again, funny how you completely gloss over the Supreme Court and the fact that, thanks to pretending that there is no difference between the two, we will have a hard right majority backing the campaign finance laws that you decry for decades. And before you say, "Well, they could expand the Court," the instant Republicans get unified control, they can expand it even farther, leading to a never-ending judicial arms race. Ralph Nader ran in 2000 with the explicit goal of throwing the election to Bush. Well, given that exit polls show that he took anywhere from 16-26% more votes from Gore than Bush, 16% of Nader's total is 15,587, and if you add that to the certified count, Gore wins by 15,050 votes despite the shenanigans of Jeb! and Harris, and we don't get an Iraq War. And Nader responded to people putting the obvious dots together (multiple members of his 2000 exploratory committee said that he promised that he wouldn't go to swing states) by denying it once his support dried up, but he relied almost entirely on Republicans to collect signatures for his 2004 campaign, and he has since been trying to convince people that it will take Michael Bloomberg or Rand Paul to save us all. Smart hill to die on.

@retmarkes Jimmy Dore doesn't want left wing policies. If he did, he would have supported the one candidate who supported those things in the general election instead of a right wing grifter like Tulsi Gabbard, even after she called Medicare for All un-American. He has mocked the idea of negotiating for prescription drug prices and lowering the Medicare age. And for all of his bluster about not taking the deal on a coronavirus package with Biden because it didn't include a $15/hour minimum wage, he wanted Democrats to take a deal with McConnell last year that would result in workers being forced to go back to work in unsafe and unsanitary conditions and have no right to sue if they got sick from coronavirus. Some champion of working people! Your accusation is your confession. I don't spend most of my effort going after Dore. My comment history shows this to be the case. However, Dore spends all of his time going after the people giving him some of the things he claims to want while not only ignoring the threat of fascism, but wanting to actively align with the fascists.

@retmarkes First of all, not a neoliberal. Second of all, I have been advocating for its abolition since I was a teenager. However, I acknowledge the reality that it is the system in place and not liking it doesn't make it go away, so we have to work within its bounds until we can get it repealed or the Interstate Compact has enough support to go into effect.

You think that Jimmy Dore supporting a bill that allowed employers to force workers back into the office without adequate protections in place and prohibiting them from suing if they got coronavirus is "taken out of context"? Then, show what you consider to be the full context that justifies this. I can also point to another reason he gave to opposing the 2021 bill being that included a one-time payment while the McConnell bill did, too. Amazing the pretzels when you don't realize who the real enemy is.

@n.e.7647 I do push for more lefty Dems. I am a believer of the adages "vote for the candidate farthest left who can win" and "use your heart in the primary, and your head in the general election." I didn't want Biden to win the nomination and did everything I could to help Bernie win (canvassing, calls, captain for a petition drive to get his delegates on the ballot in PA, and doing a reading at a fundraiser), but I live in the state whose call was the one that got Trump out of office, so I don't hesitate for second in knowing that my vote for Biden in the general election was the right call.

What percentage of Republicans voted for the 2021 coronavirus bill that cut child poverty in half compared to Democrats? What percentage of Republicans voted to confirm each of Trump's three Supreme Court nominees compared to how many Democrats? How many Justices appointed by Republicans in the Supreme Court voted for Citizens United, Shelby, and Janus compared to Justices appointed by Democrats?

@sailingthevic3966 And the MPP is a fundraising grab. How many candidates for office have they recruited? Since he's "all about the grassroots," how many state and local party chairs do they have? After all, this is something that he started from scratch, so he has been able to build it in his image.

@sailingthevic3966 I don't pretend that the Democratic Party is perfect. I operate from the simple premise that legislation should be judged based on whether or not it improves people's lives based on the status quo compared to our ideal version of the bill. For example, Jimmy Dore wanted members to vote against the 2021 coronavirus bill because it didn't have a $15/hour minimum wage, while ignoring the fact that the child tax credit increase and making it monthly cut child poverty in half. (However, in September and October of 2020, Jimmy "anyone who compromises is a sellout" Dore wanted Democrats to vote for a smaller bill McConnell pushed that would have forced workers to go back to work in unsafe and unsanitary conditions and have no right to sue if they got sick.) Anyone who looks at the partisan makeup knows that the real problem is that the Senate is 50-50, and with Republicans absolutely refusing to play ball, you have to get everyone from Bernie to Manchin on board anything. When LBJ got the Great Society through, he had over 2/3 Democratic Senators. The Senate also had a talking filibuster that could just delay things rather than stop them. There was always going to be some degree of disappointment. Jimmy Dore didn't start the Green Party, either, so does that really absolve him pushing the MPP when it has nothing to do with grassroots organizing?

@kogdanetdeneg Indeed. And she rarely seemed to know when to get into a conversation, so she'd usually just kill it dead. Her nadir was definitely interrupting Sam announcing that Anthony Kennedy was stepping down from the Supreme Court to plug an interview on her podcast.
