  1. They're basically the equivalent of forex traders, except forex (while little more than gambling) is backed up by a country or collection of countries, is backed up by even less, and it is less practical.

If I buy an ounce of gold, it will always be an ounce of gold, so that is speculation. Forex trading is hoping that some country's currency will be worth more relative to another. At best, cryptocurrency is betting that your government will go bust and regular money will be worthless. At worst, it is hoping that some other sucker will get in after you so you can get higher shares. But the crypto advocates are making contradictory arguments at the same time. If it's this super-reliable way to store money, that's not an investment where you hope it will grow.
