  2. Slavery dying gradually is a joke. In PA, a "free state," gradual emancipation was adopted in 1780 (I found all this out by visiting an Underground Railroad station last summer) that said that people who had slaves in other states could keep them in PA for less than six months at a time. If they did, they were freed. Washington rotated his slaves for one day less than six months while serving as President in Philadelphia. Slaves that were born before the declaration were still slaves as long as they shall live. The last slave in PA? 1849. Is that really a good alternative?

  3. In his memoir written in 1972, Albert Gore said that the Confederacy wasn't truly born until Appomattox. It sounds pretty accurate to me.
