  1. Barbarian literally referred to non-Romans, because Roman people believed that everyone else sounded like sheep, so it was a pretty loud dog whistle for anyone who had the slightest sense of history.

  2.  @brednbudder  Oh, okay. I remembered the above explanation in a Latin course, and didn't remember seeing barbarian in Greek. Thanks for confirming that it went back a little bit farther, but still has obvious dog whistle connotations.
