@DavidTrumbly While I agree that I have issues with taxing unrealized capital gains, there are two exceptions I am willing to make: wealth taxes along the lines of what Warren proposes, and inheritance. To me, it is the most ridiculous and obscene loophole in personal taxes. Example: if Warren Buffett wanted to give his Berkshire stock to his kids, he could do so tax free to the point where, even if they sell it later, the tax would be based on the rate at which they inherited the money. (I don't know if Bezos has kids, which is why I didn't use "Amazon winnings" as an example.) Surely, that is unrealized capital gains that should be taxed.

@schumanhuman How would a land value tax work on rural property? My brother owns a lot of land that he got dirt cheap, but you can't really develop on it.

@schumanhuman Wouldn't it be better if the incentives were to hold stocks? I think they should be taxed at the same rate as income, but I think that we have to be careful about having even greater incentive to engage in so much price speculation rather than actually finding a good company to invest in. (In the interest of disclosure, I would say that my economic philosophy is more grounded in Keynes and the original Populist movement rather than a socialist/Marxist bent, but I am a YOUge Bernie supporter.)
