  2. One of my ex-wife's friend's dad paid his down payment for him, but he insisted that he bought the house because he made the mortgage payments. The down payment is the biggest part! I know of people who said that their mortgage payment was substantially lower than the rent they were paying before. This person also ended up with no student loan debt despite only getting a partial scholarship to a school with higher tuition than most people make in a year. Gee, I wonder why he was able to pull it off.
