Healthcare is a commodity. Someone has to provide healthcare. Listening to AOC speak is painful. She just repeats something she learned in her economics course without actually understanding. Insurance is there to take on the inelastic nature of healthcare.

So why do you want government to have more control of your healthcare? 2. The medical bankruptcy issue has been argued against. You say "study after study". What studies? I gave you one. Bernie cited two in one of his articles where they stated medical bills "contribute" to bankruptcies. The study I linked looked to determine how much they contribute which is why it is in such a high impact journal. A small portion of medical bills directly cause bankruptcies. Most are because someone had a current debt at that point. For example, if someone has a $50,000 debt and then received a $500 medical bill that put them over the top to have bankruptcy, it was mainly because of other loans. It was not because of the medical bill itself. In short, those people had a very high chance of bankruptcy and would have most likely filed to overall due to other reasons. 3. Telling me to "look it up" is flawed. Read the article entitled "Our Imagination of Future Happiness and Its Shortcomings Daniel Gilbert, Stumbling on Happiness" By Jan Ott. He outlines shortcomings in measuring happiness. For example, he discusses the subjectivity of it as in how one cannot fathom how a paralyze person is happy. Overall, happiness is a subjective issue and a cultural issue as well. You really can't use it as an indicator of success. Our culture is vastly different than those Nordic nations. We have more people with much more diversity. Our culture has a different history as well. Again, just because they are happy does not mean they are in the best shape objectively. You say "studies" but point me to none. I pointed you to one though. Who is more informed at this point? 4. There is little evidence to suggest giving a homeless person a home saves money as little data exists on that. But please, give me these so call studies. Besides, you missed the point of the scenario. The point is that if you place two people in the same situation one will be happy and another wrote. It depends on their previous situation and how they view the future. 5. While I agree we increased our budget with little push back, there are many flaws there. A: Defense spending has been dropping for decades where social welfare spending has been increasing in relation to percent of GDP. B: Defense is constitutional C: Everyone agrees we need the federal government to manage defense, not so much healthcare D: You are deflecting with that argument. Finally, the free market did not create corruption. Crony capitalism did.

Insurance is there to counter the inelastic nature of healthcare. The problem with healthcare is that it is heavily regulated as we don't have a say in our insurance plans, nor do insurance companies compete.

@retromillenium , if a for profit company, in a free market, does not provide for the consumer they will go out of business. Problem is we don't have a free market system, we have a for profit system with many regulations. Education and fire departments are ran and funded locally with many volunteers and shortcomings in revanue. Is that how you want your healthcare to be ran? By some volunteer with limited revenue? The military is constitution and deals with foreign affairs. As for essential services, why not food, home, transportation, etc.? You are picking healthcare. The reason why government picks that because it is too complicated for the average person to understand and it becomes a means to control your life. Heck, you have people here saying that healthcare is a service without realizing there are many goods in healthcare as well.

@retromillenium , insurance companies do have too much power because we lack a free market in healthcare. Because of the payroll tax I have to rely on my employer for healthcare insurance. I rather choose my own plan but the government created a system where you can't do that. My solution is not more government. As for what you said about other nations "The citizens in those countries live happier," Mostly irrelevant as that is an issue of culture. Being happy does not mean you are in the best situation. Consider giving a homeless man a studio apartment to live in. Now say a middle class person in a 3 bedroom home had to downsize to a studio apartment. The homeless man will be happy where the middle class person won't be despite being in the same living conditions. All subjective. "aren't going broke from medical bills" They are broke from higher taxes. "nd 0 die because of lack of health coverage" That is 100% false. Amenable mortality is an issue in every nation. If you want to have a serious discussion you have to know the basic facts first. .

@belovedone151 , the bankruptcy argument has been challenged Read the NEJM article entitled "Myth and Measurement — The Case of Medical Bankruptcies" And we pay high prices because we receive higher quality. In the US we offer more advanced testing compare to other nations. For example, we offer more CT scans and MRIs per capita. Other nations cap how much care you receive. That is why you have people dying waiting for "elective" heart surgery in nations like Australia and Canada.

@Toad2943 , you are making a 100% moral argument which is a problem with far leftists. There is a moral argument to be made, but you also have to understand the objective side of it. You can call healthcare whatever you want, it doesn't change the objective side of the argument that resources are limited. Here, to give an easy economic example. Say you have a deserted island with 4 people and 3 sandwiches. You can moralize all you want that a sandwich is a human right and even make a law on it. In the end of the day you only have 3 sandwiches with 4 people. The same is with healthcare. You can moralize all you want on the issue. You can call it whatever you want. If you don't want to call it a commodity then fine, but that does not change the fact that someone has to provide those services and workers like that are limited in both time and man power. Calling healthcare something else does not change that reality. This is a problem with far leftists like AOC. They don't look at the argument from an objective lens

@retromillenium , we do have limited resources. It isn't money but the number of doctors, nurses, goods, etc. We have a waiting list for organs right now. Those "studies" are very deceptive in the numbers and none of them consider quality. If you cut healthcare spending to providers by 40% they will reduce accessibility and quality. How will you react if your employer cut your pay by 40%?

The one I pointed to from the NEJM, which is the highest impact factor of any peer reviewed journal, gives a more clear answer. Uh, government created this problem. No, we don't have plenty of doctors. In Europe and Australia people die waiting for "elective care". They lack resources as well. In the UK people are going blind being denied eye surgery. Care to give me the studies you point to? You claim my one article is not enough. That is still one more than you posted.

@belovedone151 , in a free market if a healthcare provider and insurance company refuse to provide no one will choose their services. I agree, we have laws that remove the free market system. Why do you want to expand government when they are the one causing problems?

Read the NEJM study entitled "Myth and Measurement — The Case of Medical Bankruptcies" Where they say "But our findings suggest that medical factors play a much smaller role in causing U.S. bankruptcies than has previously been claimed. Overemphasizing “medical bankruptcies” may distract from an understanding of the true nature of economic hardship arising from high-cost health problems." But hey, what do the experts know? I guess I should listen to a career politician like Bernie.

@belovedone151 , but profit driven motive does not create problem in the food industry. When you have competition a company has to find a way to sell you a product. If they can't they have to lower the price or improve the product. That is the reality. Also, profits means progress. I read on M4A. It is being pushed on deception and misinformation.
