Is ISKCON a North Indian or Central Indian organization? Most of the social media outrage is from ISKCON followers who are non-Bengalis. So don’t make this into a Bengali vs Rest of India issue.

@claymadness Vaishnava organizations from Bengal went out of Bengal and started preaching vegetarianism in North India because they could not find many supporters in Bengal for their religious beliefs. Now through their North Indian devotees these organizations originally from Bengal are trying to shame the Bengalis into becoming vegetarian which was their goal right from the beginning. Their North, West and South Indian devotees are zealously spreading their ideology. It is quite interesting phenomenon of religious politics if you want to analyze it.

@claymadness ISKCON global headquarters is in Mayapur in West Bengal which is birthplace of Sri Chaitanya but you will find more North/West Indians and Whites there than local Bengalis. Those are the people running sustained campaigns on and off social media in favor of vegetarianism. So you need to look closer home.

@claymadness I grew up in North India in the 80s and I clearly remember that this obsession with vegetarianism in Navatri started around the late 90s and early 2000s when various High Courts started banning animal sacrifice in Hindu temples and rituals because petitions were filed by people affiliated with Vaishnava organizations in the name of animal cruelty and hurting their religious sentiments. Nobody talks about it because it will hurt the so-called Hindu unity which basically means that all Hindus need to be vegetarian and support ban on beef because that is the Vaishnava idea of Hinduism.

Original Shaivism does not promote vegetarianism. Shaiva sects that compromised with Vaishnava sects promote vegetarianism. Vegetarian Hinduism practiced in North India today became dominant hardly 25 years ago when Vegetarian Hindus got High Courts in North and West India to ban animal sacrifice and meat offerings in Hindu temples in the late 90s

@claymadness The Vaishnava vs Shakta/Shaiva politics/conflict that started in Bengal in the medieval period has now gone pan India because Vaishnavism succeeded in defeating Shaktism/Shaivism in North, West and South India about 25 years ago when they successfully got animal sacrifice in Hindu temples banned by various state High Courts. Naturally they are now training their guns on Eastern India which is arguably the only part which is resisting them.

The sectarian opinion that meat, wine and fish should not be offered to Hindu Gods in Kaliyuga, started in medieval Bengal only. Over a period of time, this sectarian opinion became more popular in North, West and South India than in East India.
