  1. Gorbachev didn't want peace throughout Europe. He wanted socialism throughout Europe. Don't conflate subjugation under the authoritarianism of socialism with peace. The reason the Soviet Union failed under his watch was not by his design. It was a series of socioeconomic policy blunders on his part, which fortunately brought an end to the Russian threat in Europe. That is why, for the most part, Europe has been peaceful.
