As a Christian, I disliked Islam at first because I thought it was barbaric and violent, especially after reading about the violence against Christians in places like the Middle East. After reading both the Bible and parts of the Quran however, I realized how much our values align (such as objection to LGBTism, set gender roles, loyalty to your nation) and how Muslims are often the main defenders of social conservatism from anti theistic, liberal attacks. I disagree with Islamic theology on many levels, but I find them to be by far the closest religion to us.

I thought the attack was political due to Australia’s support of Timorese independence than religious

@LogicStandsBeforeGod Not really, Bush made some comments about Crusades but Iraq was mostly in support of neoliberalism. That’s my point, making a death toll for religions is hard because most justifications for war or genocide are a complex mix of political, religious, cultural, and economic conditions

@sanegayguy Can’t really debunk a religion based on violence though. Also said lists on religious violence are often very subjective, as what constitutes being in the name of a religion or not isn’t a fine line. For example, Naveed S. Sheikh’s study on the subject (which is very often cited) has Christianity at number 1 as well, but that list includes every war fought by members of said religion (for example WW1 and WW2 are labeled under Christianity despite the fact religion played very little role in either).

@LogicStandsBeforeGod I mean a lot of those Arabs were Christians.

@LogicStandsBeforeGod Uh, no? Most Christians in the Middle East are pretty fervently anti Zionist (many significant Palestinian freedom fighters were Arab Christians and Armenian groups often supported the PLO) and many of Israel’s new partners are Muslim majority countries such as Turkey, Azerbaijan, Morocco, and the Gulf states.
